The (In)Visible Signs in Nature is a way to call attention to the often unseen, unnoticed and/or feared Texas wildlife that co-exists among our urban landscape. We rarely see the bobcats, spiders, lizards, and owls that live in our habitats and when we do, we are encouraged to view from a respectful distance. However, children are often the first to see the “signs” they leave behind: pointing out spider webs in random corners, feathers left behind, footprints along paths, snake and wasp nest remains.

These canvas paintings were made by our elementary-aged students with what we found or what we mimic from nature, using the traces left behind as the brushes themselves- wasp nests, porcupine quills, feathers. Our art seeks to give these organisms another way to show up and be noticed, without fear and empowered to protect them and understand their importance in nature.

Las Señales (In)Visibles en la Naturaleza es una manera de llamar la atención sobre la vida silvestre de Texas que a menudo no se ve, pasa desapercibida y/o genera miedo, pero que coexisten en nuestro entorno urbano. Rara vez vemos a los gatos monteses, arañas, lagartijas y búhos que habitan en nuestros ecosistemas y, cuando los vemos nos recomiendan verlas a la distancia. Sin embargo, los niños suelen ser los primeros en notar las “señales” que estos dejan: señalan telarañas en rincones inesperados, plumas abandonadas, huellas en los senderos y restos de serpientes y nidos de avispas.

Estas pinturas sobre lienzo fueron creadas por nuestros estudiantes de primaria utilizando lo que encontramos o lo que imitamos de la naturaleza, empleando los rastros que esta deja como si fueran pinceles: nidos de avispas, púas de puercoespín y plumas. Nuestro arte busca ofrecer a estos organismos otra forma de hacerse presentes y ser observados, sin miedo, promoviendo el respeto y el compromiso de protegerlos y comprender su importancia en la naturaleza.
