Grackles are the true face of Austin. They capture and hold the imagination of locals and visitors. Whether you are face to face with a grackle eyeing each other for a french fry, or mesmerized by the sheer size and noise of a flock, they are omnipresent. I moved to Wimberley in 2019, only 30 miles away from Austin, and with all of the bird diversity and activity out here in the Hill Country there are zero grackles. A group of Grackles is called a Plague. For the RSM project I decided to pay homage to the amazing, cunning, noisy, brazen, numerous, beautiful, iridescent Great-tailed Grackle. I drew 8 frames of a grackle in flight. I scanned the drawings, and printed them out in different sizes to layer in a three-dimensional space and suggest the mass and depth of a Plague of Grackles. The numbers of Great-tailed Grackles is increasing rapidly as they follow human development and activity. The days of zero Grackles in Wimberley may be limited.

Los zanates son el verdadero rostro de Austin. Ellos capturan y mantienen la imaginación de los locales y visitantes. Ya sea que estés frente a frente con un zanate que te mira fijamente mientras ambos disputan una papa frita, o hipnotizado por el tamaño y el estruendo de una parvada, son omnipresentes. Me mudé a Wimberley en 2019, a solo 30 millas de Austin, y pese a toda la diversidad y actividad de aves aquí en Hill Country, no hay ni un solo zanate. A un grupo de zanates se le llama Plague (‘plaga’). Para el proyecto de RSM decidí rendir homenaje al asombroso, astuto, ruidoso, descarado, numeroso, hermoso e iridiscente zanate mexicano (Great-tailed Grackle). Dibujé ocho fotogramas de un zanate en vuelo. Escaneé los dibujos y los imprimí en distintos tamaños para superponerlos en un espacio tridimensional y sugerir la masa y profundidad de una ‘plaga’ de zanates. La población del zanate mexicano está aumentando rápidamente a medida que sigue el desarrollo y la actividad humana. Los días sin zanates en Wimberley podrían estar contados.
