Austin is known worldwide as “Bat City”. Congress Avenue Bridge is widely regarded as a shining example of peaceful coexistence with wildlife in an urban center. Austin’s bats are deeply embedded in our culture; indeed, some say they give us our sense of place.

Austin es mundialmente conocida como la “Ciudad de los Murciélagos”. El puente de Congress Avenue es considerado un claro ejemplo de la convivencia pacífica de la vida silvestre en un centro urbano. Los murciélagos de Austin están profundamente arraigados en nuestra cultura; de hecho, algunos dicen que nos dan nuestro sentido de pertenencia.

This artwork celebrates all of Austin’s native bats (Artwork by Juliet Whitsett): Esta obra de arte celebra a todos los murciélagos nativos de Austin:

Hoary bats (Lasiurus cinereus) – Named for hoar frost, when fog freezes on windowpanes.  Llamado así por la escarcha, cuando la niebla se congela en los cristales de las ventanas.

Evening bats (Nycticeius humeralis) – Little bats with great big personalities. Pequeños murciélagos con grandes personalidades.

Cave myotis (Myotis velifer) – Beautiful bats with charm and charisma galore. Hermosos murciélagos con muchísimo encanto y carisma.

Seminole bats (Lasiurus seminolus) – Hang in loblolly pines, mimicking pinecones. Se posan en pinos taeda, con aspecto de piñas.

Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) – The stars of the show at Congress Avenue Bridge. Las estrellas del espectáculo del puente de Congress Avenue.

Eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis) – Wild spirits of the woods. Espíritus salvajes del bosque.

Northern yellow bats (Dasypterus intermedius) – Large and lightning-fast palm tree dwellers. Grandes y veloces como un rayo.

Southern yellow bats (Dasypterus ega) – Delicate, charming residents of palm trees. Delicados y encantadores habitantes de las palmeras.

Tricolored bats (Perimyotis subflavus) – The famed “Chicken Nuggets” of Texas cave tours. Los famosos “Chicken Nuggets” de las excursiones a las cuevas de Texas.

Bats are the only mammal capable of true flight. Since their hands are their wings, when they fly, they are waving at us! Be Austin-friendly and wave back!

Founded by Dianne Odegard and Lee Mackenzie in 2015, Austin Bat Refuge promotes respect for these important members of our ecosystem through education, conflict-resolution, rehabilitation, and release. They have rescued and rehabilitated thousands of injured and orphaned bats and work throughout Central Texas to foster coexistence.

Fundado por Dianne Odegard y Lee Mackenzie en 2015, el Refugio de Murciélagos de Austin (Austin Bat Refuge) promueve el respeto por estos importantes miembros de nuestro ecosistema a través de la educación, resolución de conflictos, rehabilitación y liberación. Han rescatado y rehabilitado a miles de murciélagos heridos y huérfanos y han trabajado en todo el centro de Texas para fomentar la convivencia.
