COMMUNITY

While I actively create solo work, my roots lie in community-based arts (I earned a master’s degree in Community-based Arts Education from UT). I gravitate to and thrive in collaboration and find that the methods of community arts are excellent tools for engaging both the public and experts across a range of topics. My interactive work and art series, Biodiversity of Texas, uses story-telling, engages empathy, and celebrates the incredible diversity and importance of species in Texas. The extensive relationships I have developed with scientists, city and state agencies, nonprofits, museum programs and community leaders were essential to realizing this work and deeply inspiring for me. The multiple art shows, social media engagement and events that I have generated with this body of work have proven highly successful opportunities to engage a diverse public about unique species and challenges that many never knew existed.

Juliet Whitsett (she/ her) is an Austin, TX based Artist and Arts & Environmental Educator with a Master’s Degree in Community-Based Arts Education from the University of Texas at Austin. Her artistic practice focuses on endangered and threatened species works and community arts installations such as the co-creation and curation of @reallysmallmuseum_atx (2021- 2023 | Eco Museum), nature-immersed Threatened Texas Art Walks (2021, 2022), audio-based Audio Wild series (2023, Red Bluff Nature Preserve, 2022, Wild Basin Creative Research Center). She is currently an Artist Fellow for the University of Texas' Planet Texas 2050 Initiative (2022 - 2023). 

Juliet has designed public programs and family events for institutions such as the High Line in New York, University of Texas’ Planet Texas 2050, Botanical Research Institute of Texas | Fort Worth Botanic Garden, the Bullock Texas State History Museum, the Elisabet Ney Museum, Westcave Outdoor Research Center, Wild Basin Creative Research Center, the Thinkery and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. She has served as an arts and education consultant to individuals and organizations both domestically and internationally.
