The Louisiana Black Bear is on the federal threatened species list. It is not commonly known to be found in Texas anymore, although potential habitat exists in the eastern part of the state.

SPECIES INFO:

WOW! There are 16 subspecies of American Black Bear.

According to TPWD "At least two subspecies of Black Bear are thought to occur in Texas: the Mexican Black Bear (Ursus americanus eremicus) and the New Mexico Black Bear (subspecies U. a. amblyceps). Both are found in West Texas in desert scrub or woodland habitats within scattered mountain ranges, predominantly the Chisos and Guadalupe Mountains... The Louisiana Black Bear (subspeciesU. a. luteolus) is on the federal threatened species list."

Even though historically this bear denned in Texas, Mississippi, and Arkansas from what I have read, now there are only transient individuals who still visit those states from time to time.

According to the USFWS: "The main threats to the subspecies are habitat loss and fragmentation caused by the conversion of bottomland and hardwoods to agriculture. Remnant bottomland hardwoods are now protected and some marginal farmland is being replanted with hardwood trees..."

These bears have been making a big come back. In 1992 the Louisiana black bears were put on the Federal Threatened list. Twenty-four years later, it was officially removed from the List of Threatened and Endangered Wildlife under the Endangered Species Act due to recovery (greatly due to the partnership of private land owners and organizations!).
