In Place, 2026

Ceramics and other mixed media gathered from the preserve

DESCRIPTION: In Place is a site-responsive installation of small vessels by Austin-based artist Travis Benton, presented within Blunn Creek Nature Preserve. The works were made using clay gathered from within the preserve and shaped by hand, sometimes combined with other materials drawn from the surrounding environment. During firing, heat fixes form, changes the internal structure of the clay, and leaves visible records of process on each surface.

This transformation reflects a longer material history embedded in the site itself. The land here was shaped by geologic heat from a long-extinct underwater volcano, contributing to the terrain that exists today. In both the landscape and the vessels, heat is a condition that reshapes materials over time.

Together, the works draw attention to the many transformations a single material can undergo, as environments shift and processes accumulate, from seafloor to dry land, from raw clay to ceramic.
