Explore the Shapes and Colors of Cacti by Making Matisse-Inspired Art
When the health of the famous French post-impressionist painter Henri Matisse declined, the artist adopted a new way of making art: cut-outs. Matisse would cut colored paper into shapes and then arrange those shapes into compositions featuring figures and flowers, seaweed and stars.
This form of art is both accessible and eye-opening as a type of art play that allows individuals to tap into their creative side, said art and environmental educator Juliet Whitsett. “In the summer, our gardens are beautiful, but sometimes we need to take a break from the heat,” says Whitsett. “But we can borrow from Matisse—when he couldn’t go outside to his garden, he brought the garden inside with his cut-outs.”
