DESCRIPTION: The Bluff Remembers is a shadow box installation by Austin-based artist Ruben Esquivel, a fifth-generation Austinite of Latino and Indigenous descent. Esquivel’s work centers storytelling, cultural memory, and community-led conservation through layered, site-responsive public art. This piece is inspired by Red Bluff Nature Preserve and honors the quiet efforts of those who fought to protect the land, including the artist’s three uncles, who are represented standing on the bluff overlooking the preserve and the city beyond.

Using layered forms of native plants, trees, wildlife, and sky, the installation creates depth that reflects the
interconnectedness of past, present, and future. The shadow-box format invites viewers to pause and consider how landscapes hold memory and how preservation is an act of care passed from one generation to the next. The Bluff Remembers serves as both a personal tribute and a reminder that places endure because people choose to stand for them.

The ROAM Museum is a traveling exhibition set within Austin’s park preserves, celebrating these protected landscapes through site-responsive art. From February 2026 through January 2027, six Austin-based artists will showcase work that fosters reflection, dialogue, and deeper public connection to these natural spaces.

The Bluff Remembers es una instalación en formato de caja de sombras del artista radicado en Austin, Ruben Esquivel, un orgulloso austinite de quinta generación de ascendencia latina e indígena. El trabajo de Esquivel se enfoca en la narración visual, la memoria cultural y la conservación comunitaria a través de arte público sensible al sitio. Esta pieza está inspirada en la Reserva Natural Red Bluff y rinde homenaje a los esfuerzos silenciosos de quienes lucharon por proteger este espacio, incluyendo a los tres tíos del artista, representados de pie sobre el acantilado observando la reserva y la ciudad más allá. A través de formas superpuestas de plantas nativas, árboles, fauna y cielo, la instalación crea profundidad y refleja la
conexión entre pasado, presente y futuro. El formato de caja de sombras invita al público a detenerse y
reflexionar sobre cómo los paisajes guardan memoria y cómo la preservación es un acto de cuidado que se
transmite de generación en generación. The Bluff Remembers es tanto un tributo personal como un
recordatorio de que los lugares perduran porque las personas deciden defenderlos.

El Museo ROAM es una exposición itinerante que se presenta en las reservas naturales de Austin, celebrando estos paisajes protegidos a través del arte contextual. De febrero de 2026 a enero de 2027, seis artistas residentes en Austin exhibirán obras que fomentan la reflexión, el diálogo y una conexión más profunda del público con estos espacios naturales.
